Heather: What other major cultural, political, and economic situations were taking place at the time of your work on the elevator shaft?
Alexander Miles: While being recognized for my work on the elevator shaft, I was President of the Colored Republican Club of Duluth. Also, in the 1890s', Wyoming was admitted as the 44th state which was a huge deal for America.
